Ten Milestones In Stopping Underarm Sweating

Can underarm sweating be prevented, for good? How do we get out of this condition that causes a lot of embarrassment? Sweating was supposed to a normal physiological process, but how come there are people who sweat excessively?

Let’s understand the problem first.

A normal mechanism undertaken by the body in order to foster temperature regulation through dissipation of body heat, sweating is form of adaptation to increased environmental temperature. Excessive sweating, which takes place even at ordinary conditions, is caused by either of two mechanisms: primary hyperhidrosis or secondary hyperhidrosis.

Primary hyperhidrosis is the sweating whose basis is overactivity of the sweat glands owing to excess stimulation by the sympathetic nervous system. The culprit is therefore the direct malfunctioning of the sweat glands. Causal factors may be stimulant ingestion, such as caffeine, or emotional aspects, such as anxiety. On the other hand, secondary hyperhidrosis is due to an underlying medical disorder which occasionally may be life-threatening. This may call for urgent attention. Examples include diabetes and hyperthyroidism, as well as cardiovascular disorders.

Antiperspirants are a mainstay in underarm sweating control. But often it is not enough to control it. Here are some basic tips most often practiced in response to the sweating dilemma.

  • Say no to caffeine. It is a potent stimulant that has effects on the nervous system itself. Remember, overstimulation of specific nerves leads to overactivity of sweat glands.
  • Be relaxed. You can do meditation as a remedy to your anxiety, if you are the type who worries a lot. Yoga can also be practiced to reduce your tension levels.
  • Try herbal medicine. Herbs like catnip, lemon balm and chamomile can give a soothing effect and therefore stop underarm sweating.
  • Reduce, but preferably avoid, smoking and alcohol. These stimulants trigger sweat gland activity.
  • Rehydrate. Drinking plenty of water helps a lot, in making up for lost fluids in sweating as well as in helping the body cool down fast.
  • Eat a balanced diet. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables provide a distinct cleansing action in the body, allowing it to detoxify. The less toxins, the less odor.
  • Avoid preservatives. Therefore avoid food rich in preservatives, such as processed foods and canned goods. They have a potential to contain a loot of toxins and therefore contribute to body odor.
  • Maintain good hygiene. It is not bad to take a bath everyday! Regular shaving helps in toning down body odor. Shaving allows greater surface area for antiperspirant absorption.
  • Learn to adjust to typical environmental conditions. People who are used to working in air-conditioned rooms are most likely to sweat excessively upon subjection to sudden change of temperature (e.g. going out of the building or room).
  • Consult a physician. In order to rule out the possibilities of underlying disease, it is very important to seek professional help. Remember, it is important to know which type of hyperhidrosis you have. It surely is important in the management of excessive sweating.
Along with a healthy lifestyle, you are not just stopping sweating, you are also eliminating possibilities of other diseases. So start living healthy now!
